- Sigma Introduces First 68030/40 MHz Accelerator Board
- With Lossless Compression for Mac IIci and IIsi
-
- New Board Preserves Standard Slots,
- Increases CPU Speed And Doubles Storage
-
- FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 7, 1991 — Sigma Designs, Inc. (NASDAQ-SIGM) today
- announced the first 68030 40 MHz microprocessor-based accelerator add-in board
- with lossless data and image compression for the Macintosh IIci and IIsi. The
- Sigma Bullet 3040™ has a suggested retail price of $1,999 and will be available
- through most computer retail and distribution channels in March 1991.
- The board features a high speed 32K static RAM cache, a 40 MHz compression
- coprocessor from Stac Electronics, and comes bundled with the lossless
- compression software interface, DiskDoubler™ 3.0 from Salient Software, Inc.
- For the Mac IIsi, an optional 20 MHz Motorola 68882 floating point coprocessor
- can be added for an additional $199.
- Sigma will demonstrate the Bullet 3040 at MacWorld Expo in San Francisco, which
- runs January 10 through January 13. Sigma will be located at booth number 2323
- at the Moscone Center.
- What is unique in the new Sigma offering is that it combines cost-effective CPU
- acceleration with the ability to double mass storage capacity, providing a full
- system upgrade in a single product. Bullet 3040 incorporates all of the
- lossless compression capabilities included in Sigma’s newly-announced
- compression board, DoubleUp™. (See related news release for background and
- technical specifications).
- The market for Macintosh acceleration add-in board products has matured with
- products that cover a wide range of price and performance levels. In this
- market, there are generally two types of accelerators: QuickDraw accelerators
- for increasing graphics speed, and CPU accelerators that increase overall
- system speed. The Sigma Bullet 3040 is a CPU accelerator that enables IIci and
- IIsi systems to approach Mac IIfx performance by matching the IIfx’s processor
- speed.
- “The Bullet 3040 extends the system life for Mac IIci and is the first
- accelerator designed for the IIsi,” said Thinh Tran, Sigma’s founder, chairman
- and chief executive officer. “It is also the only accelerator that doubles the
- systems’ storage capacity for free, and doesn’t take up valuable expansion
- slots. ”
- In both the Macintosh IIci and IIsi, the Bullet 3040 provides acceleration and
- compression capability without taking up a standard expansion slot. For use in
- the Mac IIsi, Bullet 3040 includes an installation kit which features an
- additional expansion slot that accepts any add-in card that meets Apple’s 68030
- Processor Direct Slot (PDS) standard for the Macintosh SE/30 and IIsi. Used
- with the Macintosh IIci, the Bullet 3040 plugs directly into the system’s
- single cache slot, leaving the system’s three standard NuBus slots available .
- Sigma Designs is a leading manufacturer and marketer of application-specific
- and standard color, grayscale and monochrome personal display systems, monitors
- and controller boards for Macintosh, IBM and compatible systems that are sold
- through original equipment manufacturers, systems integrators, VARs,
- distributors and dealers.
